The demolition of the Former First Merit Building in downtown New Castle is set to resume in April 2024. The project had been temporarily delayed after additional asbestos was discovered, requiring a change order submission and negotiation process.

The careful removal of the asbestos is critical to ensure public safety and environmental compliance. The demolition process is now expected to be fully completed by June 20, 2024. Please note that this timeline is subject to change depending on circumstances. Eric Ritter, member of the City Council, stated, “While the delay was unexpected, we want to ensure this is done right the first time so no unforeseen penalties or problems with the site are discovered years down the road.”
